Web 2.0 Local Reviews; Don’t Fake the Funk

In Other peoples posts, Web 2.0 on November 14, 2008 at 10:04 pm

The latest offering from Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares aired on Channel 4 last night, followed the somewhat disastrous adventures of ex-boxer Mike and his wife Caron Ciminera as they struggled to run the Fish & Anchor, a restaurant in Lampeter, West Wales. Whilst the couple’s arguing appeared to better the food they were originally sending out (a mix of jarred sauces and home cook book trophy dishes) they did let slip on a fantastically poor bit of black hat optimisation, which I hope made all white hat SEOs laugh out loud.

If there was one lesson to take away from the show, it would be – Don’t fake reviews!

In order to gauged the feeling of the local community for the failing restaurant come sports bar, Ramsay conducted a search on Google for the Fish & Anchor, to which he was presented with a range of reviews, two of which were rather suspiciously from a character calling himself Michael or Mike Burns.

On the Wales portal of the BBC website Burns had posted “Well i don’t get excited about food too often, and having dined in Rick Stein’s, and Gordon Ramsay’s,I think i have found a better restaurant in West Wales”. On the SugarVine website he also posted “what a fantastic restaurant for couples, and families. it seems to have everything, the food has to be the best i have eaten (home or abroad) this place will go far”. Other online reviews echoed what has already been said, but with the dire state of the restaurant, its food, its reputation and its perception from both the local community and Ramsay itself, would it not be right to question who was telling the truth?

The restaurateur confessed to posting the reviews, his rational pointing to stimulating custom, however with any reactive strategy it requires a degree of foresight – and I am not sure he really thought through the wider ramification of posting these “inaccurate” reviews.

Firstly, a warning must be expressed. For example, if someone finds your restaurant or hotel via a positive (fake) review and they have a bad experience, there is a chance that they will post a true review to assist fellow users and generally have a rant. The initial seeding of this true review has the potential to lead to an onslaught of further reviews from other visitors who might not have otherwise posted. Don’t forget the saying “people don’t lead… they follow”.

But how can you manage your reviews and ultimately what your customers are saying about you? Well first and foremost, address the problem(s)!

You wouldn’t put a sticking plaster on a gun shot wound, so why think that a positive review about the quality of your food or the softest of your sheets is going to counteract the adversities of your customer service?

The customer is king, a point stressed by Ramsay, and one that should ring true for any business, after all, without them, where would we be?

By rectifying or at least making plans to manage any failings within your business, regardless of its size, will be the first step in managing your online reputation, but this is an area I will not going into comprehensive detail for this post. Instead, I will offer some simply pointers as to how to harness online reviews for good.

Sites like Trip Advisor, which boasts over 10,000,000 user generated reviews of various hotels, holidays and restaurants is gaining increasing weighting as an resource for honest and unbiased review and via its system of community recommendation it really has the power to drive custom, and in many instances, divert customer – the key factor being positive, and consistent reviews.

But if you do run a successful hotel or restaurant and wish to harness these social spaces, but wish to do so in a more ethical way than that demonstrated in Kitchen Nightmares than why not encourage your diners of hotel guests to post a review after their stay.

When the customer is paying their bill or even booking their hotel room why not take their email address, or even ask them to submit their business card in return for entry into a monthly prize draw for a free meal in the restaurant?

In addition to building up a client database by collecting this data – for use in promotional mailings including notifying customers of events, promotional and the launch of a new menu – you can also harness it to stimulate online reviews by dropping your customers a short email after their stay / meal, which might look something like the following example…

“Good afternoon Simon, and thank you very much for your booking at the Leapfrogg Restaurant, we hope you had an enjoyable meal.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our food and our attentive staff however we’re always striving to enhance and improve what we do, and as such we would appreciate you taking two minutes of your time to write a review for us at Trip Advisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com), a free travel guide and research website that allows users to post review and ratings.

Your comments are important to us, and will be used to improve the Leapfrogg restaurant.

Thank you very much for your time and we look forward to welcoming you again to the Leapfrogg restaurant in the near future. Don’t Fake the Funk

Best Social Media Tools for Journalists

In Other peoples posts, Web 2.0 on November 5, 2008 at 9:06 pm

In the ever-evolving world of social media, public relations professionals (PR) and journalists have more opportunities than ever to build strong relationships.

It serves each of us well to stay up on social media trends—learning faster, easier ways to share information.

With that, here are 10 of the best social media tools for PR professionals and journalists:

Help a Report Out (HARO)

Help a Reporter Out (HARO) – As a PR professional, this is by far my favorite tool. The brainchild ofPeter Shankman, this is the only free resource I am aware of where reporters submit queries directly to PR professionals – no strings attached. Subscribers to the list serve receive up to three daily emails, each with anywhere from 15-30 queries per email.

What I like best? It is a win-win tool for both journalists and PR professionals.

PitchEngine

PitchEngine - The emergence of the social media release (SMR) will soon dominate in interactions between journalists and PR people. Those who do not take the initiative to learn about the “new press release” will get left behind. My favorite tool to date is PitchEngine. Still in beta stage, PitchEngine offers a full suite of Web 2.0 tools for PR professionals and journalists (i.e. links to your social network profiles, video and audio capabilities, etc…). Readers may opt to receive a release on any social networks they belong to.

What I like the best? If a reporter or blogger likes what I pitch, they can subscribe to my releases via RSS.

ReportingOn

ReportingOn - Still in its beta stage, this social network is designed for reporters to discuss their beat or stories. An asynchronistic communication style similar to Twitter, the question this time is, “What are you reporting on?” There are around 600 reporters and professionals from around the world subscribed to the network. Only time will tell if this is a viable tool, and for the time being I’m a member.

What I like the best? Journalists have the ability to tag their beat(s) making it easy for PR professionals to find reporters and offer sources.

Journalisted

Journalisted (UK) – Developed by Martin Moore of Media Standards Trust, this site is meant for consumers to search their favorite reporters and stay up to date on their work. It currently boasts more than 100,000 unique users. The downfall? It currently features only reporters in the UK. Moore says he plans to broaden the reach and is currently targeting the US.

What I like the best? PR professionals can check the site before pitching a reporter in the UK to read their recent work.

Wikis

Wikis - I’m opening up a broad category here—wiki pages. PR professionals can create a shared space in which to provide information to reporters. From interview source contact information to comprehensive product/company background, a wiki site can become a living media kit. Free wiki sites, like PBwiki, offer security features to protect updates and email notification options.

What I like the best? Wiki page(s) are created with user generated content and can be edited in real-time to best meet the needs of reporters.

Media People Using Twitter

Media people using Twitter - I have yet to find a truly comprehensive list of all reporters on the microblogging site Twitter. However, this is the closest I’ve come. A wiki site dedicated to journalists on Twitter.

What I like the best? The wiki page is organized by geographic location, offering an easy-to-use guide.

Twellow

Twellow - Seek one another out and connect. It’s a beautiful thing when PR professionals and journalists form a relationship before either one needs anything from the other. Type in a key word such as “journalist” or “public relations” (big surprise) and start following.

What I like the best? The search content is based on a person’s Twitter bio, making the results surprisingly accurate.

BeatBlogging.org

BeatBlogging.org - A resource for beat bloggers, PR professionals can use this as a source to build a strong pitch distribution list. I’ve heard from many reporter friends that more and more they are looking to blogs for trends and upcoming story ideas.

What I like the best? Participants can nominate reporters as “innovative” leaders where they may be featured on the frequently updated Leaderboard.

WiredJournalists.com

WiredJournalists.com - Created for reporters, editors, executives, students and faculty, this tool is for journalists with access to limited resources. The members of the network keep up with Web 2.0 trends and share resources with one another.

What I like the best? Even if you don’t visit the site frequently, it’s a nice resource to keep your finger on the pulse of new journalism trends.

Your Pitch Sucks

Your Pitch Sucks (YPS) – The jury is still out on YPS, but nonetheless I mention it. Submit your draft pitch to public relations experts for a serious review. They will let you know whether or not your pitch is up to par (and if it’s not they offer suggestions).

What I like the best? If you are a freelancer and need another set of eyes to review your work, this saves a few headaches.

    Dive into web 2.0ol

     3.October 2008 11:26

This is my first Blog.  I’ve logged in the woods and into a computer but never blogged.  Does the B in Blog stand for Blah, Blah, Blah , Blah?  Like a logging of Blah, blah…?  This is a real question.  Anyways, my story begins in a small southern town on the wrong side of the tracks… Sorry, wrong story.

Web 2.0, is it grammatically correct to start a sentence with a Link

Warning: I will not be parenthesizing!

I’ll start from the top, Web 2.0 is overwhelming at first, like dipping your toe in an unheated pool.  These are the worries; Where do I start? How much personal information should I really post on the internet? Does my facebookmake me look fat?  These are all concerns I share with you, you being the newbies.  I had a Myspace back in the good ol’ days but it seemed a little like your own locker in high school.

So why would a self proclaimed 3rd degree master of marketing the american way dive back into this pool party like somebody added massive amounts of cherry Jello sugar powder? and that is the question.  Why did Brad Pitt wear a chicken costume and wander the streets of Hollywood?  Why do spiders build webs? Why does somebody raise their hand in class? Why did the Seattle Supersonics have to move to (unamed); it still stings a little to say or write.  It all has to do with Google, kind of like the 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon, or shaking hands with everybody in Dallas (the city).  Now if you could do Dallas in one sitting that would be impressive but most people need to set up an old fashion pyramid scheme.  It’s not what you know, it’s who you know or more like what you know about who you know or how you know who you know or who of you know what I’m actaully saying right now.

Are people that Tweet called Twitters or Twits?  Can 1 person be called a Twitter if the are Tweeting?  In all of my perusing for SEM applicable applications, I found using Facebook as a hub gave me the weekest excuse to spend hours posting and updating, and… My face book has almost every over the counter app syndicated to it that Facebook allows.   I know there’s a strategic space in my first face book in the last sentence.  But I don’t know if that matters.  I love Del.icio.us , I wish I had always had that.  It keeps track of neat sites and lets me tag them. Last.fm does kind of the same thing but with music and different. Google Reader  gathers the best stories from all of the web and organizes them for you, kind of like an online newstand.  I’m also using Flickr for storing images I like and then feeding that to my starving hub.  I am trying to dig Digg  but I was a landscaper for almost 3 years, so it feels like work to me.  Moving on, to StumbleUpon I can just keep rhymin on and on.  This bloggin makes me feel so insecure, like my thoughts or lack of are exposed to the elements.  The disclaimer is, what I am trying to do here is express a real world trip and tumble, digg and stumble first time idiot’s guide to social networking.  Honestly, if you are interested in marketing your website on the internet, start getting creative.

This cornucopia of quirky computer show and tell can pay off in duckets

So the real message of this is, if you are going to link farm, farm organically. tw
